New Optimists at EU science comms conference

We’re helping organise the EU-funded Cities and Science Communication (CASC) Conference being held at Thinktank 26th-28th January, i.e. this week.

On Thursday 27th at 1:30pm, there’ll be a panel discussion with The New Optimists, chaired by Sue Beardsmore. Aston’s Professor Peter Lambert, a microbiologist and plant scientist Dr Juliet Coates from the University of Birmingham will be joining Kate Cooper to talk about why science matters to us all.

Video: The New Optimists at British Science Festival 2010

As part of British Science Festival 2010, five scientists who contributed to the book sat on a panel at Aston University, and we’ve got some video footage below.

The panellists included computer scientist Russell Beale, biological chemist Tim Bugg, systems biologist Miriam Gifford, oncologist Paul Moss and neuroscientist Gina Rippon, who were asked questions by the audience as well as chair Sue Beardsmore.

The topics ranged from controlling cancer to the nature of science coverage in the media; from the development of biofuels to the importance of energy conservation, and plenty more besides.

Organising the launch of The New Optimists

I’ve spent a fair bit of today sorting out the arrangements for the book launch on http://newoptimists.eventbrite.com.

Many of the scientists there, plus Jenny Uglow and editor Keith Richards. The BBC’s David Shukman will speak (providing there isn’t another volcano suddenly erupting or a galaxy or two crashing into each other). I’ve also commissioned the Ben Markland Quartet with singer Sara Colman

Q&A event at the Science Festival

Five scientists — computer scientist Russell Beale, biological chemist Tim Bugg, systems biologist Miriam Gifford, oncologist Paul Moss and neuroscientist Gina Rippon will be on the panel for the British Science Festival event at 1900 on 15th September for The New Optimists. (Room 549, Aston University Main Building, book here.)

Sue Beardsmore will be chairing the event, taking questions from the audience and others at Aston University, along with help from a twitterstream. Join in! (We haven’t managed to organise a webcast, alas!)
