4th July: School students, the Library Theatre & four New Optimists

Over 125 secondary school pupils will be in the Library Theatre in central Birmingham tomorrow at 1:45pm.

They’re taking part in quizzing four New Optimists scientists about what they’re doing to make the world a better place.

The students are from King Edwards Girls’ School, Ludlow CE School and Small Heath School. They will each be given a copy of the book The New Optimists: Scientists View Tomorrow’s World and What It Means to Us.

The four scientists on the panel each wrote a chapter in the book. They are (from top left clockwise) occupational psychologist Professor Craig Jackson, pharmacologist Dr Roger Mcfadden, optometrist Professor James Wolffsohn and Director of the Institute of Gaming and Animation computer scientist Dr Sarah Slater. I (Kate Cooper) will be chairing the panel.

There are a few seats still available. So if you’d like to come, drop by and/or give Jen Bakewell a call on 0121 303 2175 or email her on jen.bakewell@birmingham.gov.uk.

This event is one of the Young Readers Birmingham events run by Birmingham Libraries. We’d like to thank Birminghamn Libraries — and Jen Bakewell in particular for organising this event.

note: Earlier publicity said Dr Lynsey Melville would be taking part. Unfortunately, she can’t make it, so Dr Roger Mcfadden has stepped into the breach. We’re very grateful to him for taking part at such short notice.
